Underwater Photography Specialty Course

One of our passions at Nature Island Dive is underwater photography. All of our staff members have at least dabbled in photography, while some of them are professionals.

This week we had two participants from the National Geographic Photographer Challenge expanding their knowledge about underwater photography: Nazarene Winston, our Boat Captain, and David Malcolm, a Marine Scientist and one of the Team Leaders for the Nat Geo Project. Joined by staff members Joy David (Divemaster), Kimberley Williams (Divemaster Trainee) and Raina Barnard-Royer (Summer Intern), the class was led by Simon Walsh of Images Dominica and Nature Island Dive.

Simon has been photographing Dominica above and below the water for three decades. He’ll be the first to tell you that understanding fish behaviour is an essential part of underwater photography. Perfect Buoyancy is also key – along with special techniques for lighting object under the sea.  These were just a few of the tips he shared with this group of young, eager photographers this week.

First Lecture Session – Understanding Equipment

Equipment

While there is a wide range of underwater camera equipment available today, we have found this simple – and affordable — camera set-up to deliver very good quality photographs, with an extra level of user security. Flooding an underwater camera is always a possibility, but with the combination of Olympus Waterproof Camera AND its housing, you can rest a little easier that this disaster will not ruin your day.
