As we continue our conservation efforts, this month we have embarked on a new project – learning about Coral Spawning.

With the kind assistance of Marianne and Phillip from IGREC MER in Guadeloupe, we have undergone two days of training in what to expect when this particular species of stony coral, spawns.

Coral spawning is the way that hard corals reproduce. This month, the Grooved Brain Coral (DLAB) is having its moment in the spotlight. Just before sunset at particular times of the month (guided by water temperature, season, and moon phases), these amazing creatures release their eggs and sperm into the sea.

Why does it matter?

Well, after the past year and a half of battling Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), we have entered the next phase of our conservation work – to help increase the reproduction of stony corals and re-populate the sea to keep balance in our marine environment.

A team of a dozen volunteers tried their hands at catching the spawning coral — and we were successful!!
