At Nature Island Dive our passion for the sea, and everything in it, is what drives us and gives us joy every single day. We have been protecting the marine environment in Soufriere since 1994. We live and work in the fishing village of Soufriere, Dominica, surrounded by the amazing Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR). This is our front yard and we cherish it.

SSMR

With the recent advent of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), we have been studying, identifying and monitoring many hard corals.

In collaboration with the Fisheries Division of the Government of Dominica, we implemented a program to treat hard corals from the moment the disease reached our shores in early 2021.

Although SCTLD is deadly and spreads quickly, we have made major strides in saving hard corals that have been under our care by treating them with a special mixture of antibiotics that adheres to the coral.

We have also built several Coral Trees to preserve and grow the most important coral species so that we can replant them in the future.

When you join is for a Conservation Dive, you might visit one of our Coral Trees to see the process of ‘planting’ coral and to clean the coral that is already growing there. Or you might aid conservation efforts by helping to survey coral on one of our many dives sites, identifying diseased coral or helping with the treatments which are administered through a large syringe.

Together, we can make a difference and keep Dominica’s marine environment healthy and beautiful for generations to come.
